Restoring Dignity at Home: How we Transformed a Bathroom for a Heroic Single Mother

For one single mother in our community, every day began and ended with the exhausting, risky task of lifting her disabled son into a bathtub. She did it with love, but she did it alone, and at a cost to her own health and his safety.
At WHI, every regular renovation we complete helps fund free renovations for families who can’t afford them. Our business isn’t just about beautiful spaces — it’s about building better lives.
When a Bathtub Becomes a Barrier
For one single mother, something as basic as helping her son take a shower had become an increasingly dangerous and exhausting daily task. Her teenage son, who has a special condition, needs hands-on assistance to bathe. As he’s grown, lifting him in and out of the high-sided bathtub became not only difficult — it became unsafe.
She was doing it anyway. Every day. Alone.
That’s when she left a comment on a local Facebook post, explaining her struggle — not as a complaint, but as a cry for help. When we saw it, we knew this was exactly the kind of family we’re here to serve.
Our Mission in Action
Our mission goes beyond traditional home improvement. We use profits from our business to fund free renovations for families in need — people who are struggling, often quietly, with challenges that make everyday life harder than it should be.
This was one of those families. And this was one of those moments where our work could truly change lives.
The Renovation: Creating a Space That Works for Them
We completely stripped out the existing bathroom: the bath, the shower screen, the tiled floor, and the old wall coverings. In their place, we built something safer, simpler, and more accessible:
A walk-in shower cubicle — no more lifting required
Hygienic splash-backs for easy cleaning and water resistance
A re-plastered and freshly painted rear wall
New under-flooring and lino for a warm, safe surface
It wasn’t just a bathroom remodel — it was a complete rethinking of the space for this boy’s comfort and independence, and for his mother’s safety and peace of mind.
The Reactions We’ll Never Forget
When the renovation was done, the mother was in shock — overwhelmed in the best way. She couldn’t believe what had been done for them. But it was her son’s response that moved us the most.

"He got out of the car, went straight into the bathroom, stepped into the shower cubicle… and just stood there grinning."
No words, just joy. He knew it was for him. And he loved it.
His mother and grandmother were both beyond grateful. For them, it wasn’t just a new bathroom. It was relief. It was dignity. It was someone finally helping them carry the weight they’d been holding on their own for years.
Why We Do This Work
This project is just one example of how your support — as a customer, a follower, a member of our community — helps make a real difference. Every standard renovation we complete funds moments like this.
And we’re just getting started.
If you know of a family who could benefit from a similar act of care, please get in touch. Or help us spread the word by sharing this story.
Together, we can keep turning tools and tiles into something so much greater: hope, freedom, and support where it's needed most.
